In 2014, two Chinese jiggers (the Fu Yuan Yu 879 and 981) were quarantined off the coast of Montevideo following the deaths of two crew and the hospitalization of two others in separate incidents. Illness onboard the vessel was reported in 2014, with crew showed symptoms of beriberi: "oedemas in the legs, fatigue, respiratory difficulties and heart issues".
