1. Twelve sailors disembarked in Montevideo, Uruguay, claiming rampant physical abuse occurred on board the Jia De 1. The claims included shackling, beatings and starvation. Despite an initial outcry from the Uruguayan government, a court dismissed the investigation only a few days later saying the sailors weren't Uruguayan, that the abuse didn't happen in Uruguayan waters, that there may have been a cultural difference in food and work schedules and that — despite doctors referring the men to hospitals — the sailors showed no signs of recent physical abuse.
