Email sent to the contact address for the Jinghai Group, which owns Rongcheng Rongyuan Fishery
The email said: "My name is Ian Urbina and I'm the founder of The Outlaw Ocean Project, a nonprofit journalism organization based in the United States. We are conducting an investigation and found that in 2021, a deckhand named Rafly Maulana Sadad was placed on a Chinese distant-water fishing ship owned by Rongcheng Rongyuan, called the Lu Rong Yuan Yu 978. Sadad fell down the stairs and broke his back while working aboard this vessel, and the captain did not allow him to leave the ship for the next five months, delaying medical treatment until he was dropped off in Montevideo in August 2021.
Can you answer a few questions for us about this case?
- Do you have a record of this person, Rafly Maulana Sadad?
- Can you explain why Sadad says that he was not allowed off the ship for medical treatment when he sustained the back injury?
- Can you explain how Sadad sustained his injury?"
