Email sent to Laskaridis Shipping Co. Ltd.

The email said: "My name is Ian Urbina. I am the director of The Outlaw Ocean Project, a journalism organization based in Washington, D.C., in the United States, and I'm working on a magazine story about labor issues and other crimes at sea on board vessels of the Chinese fishing fleet. We are reaching out to request a reply from the captain of the Marlin, which we mention in the story, to our statement below.

Several sources, including individuals in Montevideo who interacted Daniel Aritonang before his death in 2021, along with data collected on ship movements, show the following:

    1. On March 2, 2021, Daniel Aritonang, an Indonesian man suffering from the disease beriberi, was transferred from the Zhen Fa 7 to the Marlin. The Marlin’s crew brought Aritonang by skiff to the port of Montevideo, Uruguay, dumped him there, and motored away.

We need an official response in writing from the captain of the Marlin on the above statement by the end of the business day on Monday, August 28th. Thank you."

Future correspondence will be added here as this conversation continues.
